Guests in Town, AC, and patio steps oh my...

Wow what a week.  I'm grateful and thankful I have the opportunity to host my brother's family-all four children.  But having eight people living in my house for a week is trying to say the least.  I haven't seen my poor cat in days; Tigre, are you still alive?????   (Yes, he is)

My Central air conditioning will be installed in mid July so I purchased one of those 'portable air conditioners' from Lowe's.  It works pretty well, definitely cools the entire first floor, but the partitioned off second floor doesn't cool so well.  HINT:  if you can't get central air, get two portable AC units, one for the downstairs and one for the second floor, turn off all the first floor and closet heat exchanges and turn the furnace fan on, this way the cooled air is circulated through out the house.  It does a fair job on the second floor but it is still too humid up there for my comfort.

I also built stairs for the patio door yesterday.  Overall I enjoyed the process, my first set of stairs and it was definitely a DYI job, no need to hire someone to do this.  I will post pictures soon.

One more thing:  the house next to mine went on the market tonight.  I hope I didn't scare my neighbor away.  Hopefully whoever purchases the house is very, very, very nice.  I want nice neighbors.  Please say a prayer.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Independence Day.

  1. I had never heard of getting the a/c after close. I thought Ryan did all of that before you took ownership of the house?

    1. Yes, they will install the AC during construction for about 4K, but they hint to customers that if we're willing to wait, we can probably save some money after the home is built. The company that installs the HVAC drops by to adjust the heat exchanges and answer any questions about the heating system as well as have us sign a contract that we will only use their company for maintenance the first two years to keep the warranty intact. During this meeting, they offer to install the central AC for about 2K. I decided to wait a few months and save about 2k in the process (I know, I'm cheap).

How's your house working out? I really love the Ravenna model. It is available about 1/2 mile from me, but I didn't need the space and I definetley didn't want the payment. But wow, you have a great model; I grew up in a house very similar to the Ravenna and it was a great place to grow up! I hope you enjoy it.

  2. We are loving the Ravenna! We weren't offered AC as an option, it was included in the package (and the price) You were smart to pay half as much for it! I know what you mean about the payment. I don't want it either! We see people with smaller homes doing things and I think "Yeah, if we had bought that house we could be adding all that stuff already, too." It seems like most of us with the bigger houses are going at a slower rate on things like decks, patios, fancy landscaping, etc.

    1. Hi Rick and Nadase,

I've seen your blog and I'm truly thankful you've been so patient. God does bless us in many ways (even if it doesn't always feel like a blessing). I wish you the best of fortune with the construction and ownership of your new home. I will continue to update my blog with changes to my house and thoughts on home ownership, etc. Please continue to check it out. Take care.
